There is a persistent and damaging myth about wildflowers: that they grow themselves. That you scatter a packet of seed on bare ground in April, stand back, and by July you are standing in a meadow worthy of a Constable painting. The myth is perpetuated by seed packet illustrations, by the romanticised language of rewilding, and by a collective nostalgia for a pre-agricultural landscape that most of us have never actually seen. The truth is more interesting and, in the end, more rewarding: wildflowers are not easier than garden plants, they are differently demanding. Get those demands right — the right plants for the right soil and situation, sown at the right time into the right seedbed — and the results exceed anything achievable by conventional gardening. Get them wrong and you have a patch of docks and annual meadow grass.

The wildflower garden is not a return to nature. It is a highly deliberate act of cultivation, guided by ecological knowledge rather than horticultural convention, and it produces, at its best, a beauty that is categorically different from the cultivated border — looser, more various, more alive to the movements of insects and the breath of wind, and more deeply connected to the landscape of place and season that surrounds it. That beauty is worth pursuing with intelligence and care.


Why Wildflowers Now

The ecological case for growing native wildflowers in gardens hardly needs stating at length in an era when the loss of species-rich habitats has become one of the most widely understood environmental catastrophes of the modern period. Britain has lost ninety-seven per cent of its wildflower meadows since the Second World War — a statistic so extreme that it requires repetition before it fully registers. The hay meadows, water meadows, chalk downlands, woodland rides and road verges that were once the most flower-rich habitats in northern Europe have been largely converted to intensively farmed grassland, built upon, or simply abandoned to rank vegetation following the cessation of traditional management. The insects that depended on them — the bees, butterflies, hoverflies, beetles and moths that constitute the base of most terrestrial food chains — have declined in parallel, in what ecologists have described as an insect apocalypse whose downstream consequences for all wildlife, including birds, bats and ultimately human agricultural systems, are profound.

Gardens cover approximately 433,000 hectares in Britain — more land than all the National Nature Reserves combined. The potential of that collective space, converted even partially to habitats that support native wildflowers and the insects that depend on them, is genuinely significant. This is not a counsel of perfection — not every garden need become a nature reserve — but it is a practical argument for treating wildflower gardening as something more than a lifestyle choice.

The aesthetic case is equally strong, if less urgent. A well-managed wildflower meadow in June — ox-eye daisies, yellow rattle, meadow buttercups, red clover, field scabious and the nodding, deep blue heads of meadow cranesbill among the grasses — is one of the most beautiful sights available in a British landscape, and it is entirely achievable in a garden of almost any size if the soil conditions are managed correctly. Cornfield annuals in a prepared bed — field poppies, cornflowers, corn chamomile, corncockle and pheasant’s eye — produce a display of extraordinary colour and delicacy in June and July that no cultivated annual border can quite match in naturalness and charm.


Understanding Wildflower Habitats

The most important principle of wildflower gardening — the one that, when understood, unlocks everything else — is that different wildflowers are adapted to different habitats, and planting a wildflower in the wrong habitat is as likely to fail as planting a water lily in a dry border. Native plants have evolved over millennia in specific soil, moisture and light conditions, and they signal their preferences through their natural distribution with unmistakable specificity.

The major wildflower habitats of relevance to the garden are the following.

Neutral grassland meadow. The traditional hay meadow, mown once or twice annually in late summer, maintained by low soil fertility that prevents aggressive grasses from overwhelming the wildflowers. Suited to: meadow buttercup, ox-eye daisy, field scabious, knapweed, yellow rattle, meadow cranesbill, ragged robin, self-heal, bird’s-foot trefoil, lady’s bedstraw, common spotted orchid, meadow clary.

Chalk and limestone grassland. The most species-rich of all British habitats, supporting extraordinary plant diversity on the thin, alkaline, free-draining soils of chalk downland and limestone pavement. Suited to: wild marjoram, salad burnet, small scabious, squinancywort, cowslip, kidney vetch, horseshoe vetch, clustered bellflower, wild thyme, pyramidal orchid, bee orchid, chalk milkwort.

Acid grassland and heathland. Low-fertility, acid soil supporting heathers, tormentil, heath bedstraw and their associates. Less commonly replicated in gardens but achievable on naturally acid soils, particularly in the west and north.

Cornfield annual habitat. The disturbed, cultivated, relatively fertile soil of arable field margins, where annual wildflowers completed their life cycle with the agricultural rotation. These species — field poppy, cornflower, corn chamomile, corn marigold, corncockle, pheasant’s eye, Venus’s looking-glass — cannot compete with perennial vegetation and require annual soil disturbance to persist. In the garden, they are grown as deliberate annual sowings on cultivated soil.

Woodland and woodland edge. Dappled shade, moist, humus-rich soil, the characteristic British flora of primroses, bluebells, wood anemones, wild garlic, red campion, foxgloves and wood sorrel. Largely self-sustaining once established in appropriate conditions.

Wetland and pond margin. Moist to waterlogged conditions supporting ragged robin, marsh marigold, purple loosestrife, yellow iris, meadowsweet, water avens and the extraordinary diversity of aquatic flora. Replicable in any garden with a pond or naturally wet area.

Hedgerow and scrub edge. A transitional habitat between open grassland and woodland, supporting dog rose, field maple, blackthorn, hawthorn, wild clematis (old man’s beard), ivy and their associated wildflowers: herb robert, red campion, greater stitchwort, wild garlic.


The Wildflower Meadow: How It Actually Works

The wildflower meadow is the most ambitious and most misunderstood of all wildflower garden projects. The failures are numerous and well-documented; the successes are extraordinary. The difference between failure and success almost always comes down to soil fertility management, plant choice and management regime — not to the quality of the seed or the good intentions of the gardener.

The fertility paradox. Wildflower meadows are not the reward for a well-fed, well-manured, highly fertile lawn. They are the opposite: they thrive on soil of low to very low fertility, because it is precisely the absence of excess nitrogen that prevents vigorous grasses and competitive weeds from overwhelming the delicate meadow flowers. The single most common reason for wildflower meadow failure in gardens is starting on ground that is too fertile — former lawn, vegetable garden or border soil that has been improved over years with compost, manure and fertiliser. In such conditions, the grasses grow lushly and the wildflowers are suppressed almost immediately.

The solutions are: removing the existing topsoil to expose the naturally lower-fertility subsoil; importing low-fertility subsoil or crushed limestone rubble as a growing medium; or growing yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor) for several seasons to parasitise and weaken the grass before introducing wildflowers.

Yellow rattle deserves its own paragraph because it is the key to converting an existing lawn into a wildflower meadow. This semi-parasitic annual attaches its roots to grass roots and extracts a proportion of the grass’s nutrients, significantly weakening its growth. The reduction in grass vigour creates the gaps in the sward through which wildflowers can establish. Yellow rattle must be sown in autumn — it requires a period of cold stratification to germinate — directly onto a scarified lawn surface. After two or three seasons of yellow rattle growth, the grass is sufficiently weakened to allow wildflower plug plants or seed to establish successfully. Without this step, or the equivalent fertility reduction, most wildflower meadow attempts on existing lawn fail.

Sowing timing. For perennial wildflower meadow mixes, autumn sowing (August to October) is generally superior to spring sowing, as many native wildflower seeds require cold stratification — a period of cold, moist conditions — before they will germinate. Seeds sown in autumn receive this treatment naturally during winter and germinate more freely in spring. For cornfield annual mixes, both autumn and spring sowing work well.

Mowing regime. A wildflower meadow is maintained by cutting, not by neglect. The standard regime is: allow to grow from spring; cut once in late July or August after the majority of wildflowers have set seed; remove the cuttings (very important — leaving cut material on the surface adds fertility and suppresses wildflower re-establishment); optionally cut again in autumn. Some meadow managers also cut in early spring before growth begins. The removal of cuttings is not optional: it is the mechanism by which fertility is extracted from the system, year on year, gradually improving conditions for the wildflowers.


Wildflowers by Habitat: Key Species and Their Characters

The Meadow

Ox-eye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) is perhaps the most immediately recognisable of all British wildflowers — large, white-rayed daisy flowers on tall stems of 60 to 80cm, flowering from May to September. It establishes readily from seed, spreads by self-seeding and by the gradual expansion of its rosette, and is one of the most reliable of all meadow wildflowers. Visited by enormous numbers of pollinating insects. Essential.

Field scabious (Knautia arvensis) bears lilac-mauve flower heads of great delicacy on tall, branching stems from June to September. It is one of the most important late-summer nectar sources for bumblebees, especially the long-tongued species, and one of the most beautiful of all meadow flowers in its own right. Requires neutral to alkaline, well-drained soil.

Meadow cranesbill (Geranium pratense) is the wild counterpart of the garden hardy geranium — tall, with deeply cut leaves and rich violet-blue flowers of great beauty in June and July. It is a vigorous and reliable meadow plant that also performs well in a garden border context, associating particularly naturally with grasses. Seeds itself freely in appropriate conditions.

Meadow buttercup (Ranunculus acris) is one of the defining flowers of the traditional hay meadow — its golden-yellow, varnished petals catching the June light with an intensity that explains why the old country name was ‘gold cups’. It is not the same as the invasive creeping buttercup (R. repens) — the meadow buttercup is an upright, elegant plant that does not spread by runners and sits naturally in managed grassland.

Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) flowers from June to September with hard, thistle-like heads of rich purple-pink — one of the most important late-season nectar sources for bumblebees, butterflies (particularly the smaller species) and hoverflies. Robust and reliable on a wide range of soils. Greater knapweed (C. scabiosa) has larger, more elegant flowers with a fringe of broader ray florets and is similarly valuable.

Ragged robin (Silene flos-cuculi) is one of the most instantly recognisable of all meadow flowers, its deeply fringed, ragged pink petals on slender stems utterly unlike anything in the standard garden palette. It is a plant of damp meadows and marshy ground and requires moisture-retentive soil to perform well. In the right conditions it self-seeds freely and creates colonies of considerable beauty.

Bird’s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) is a low-growing, sprawling perennial with bright yellow flowers (often touched with orange-red on the back of the petals, earning it the country name eggs and bacon) carried in small clusters from May to September. It is the larval food plant of several butterfly species including the common blue and the wood white, and one of the most ecologically valuable of all meadow plants. Requires full sun and well-drained, low-fertility soil.

Yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor) has already been discussed as the meadow-maker’s essential tool, but it deserves acknowledgement here as a wildflower of genuine beauty in its own right — pretty, yellow-hooded flowers in May and June, followed by inflated seed pods that rattle when ripe (giving the plant its name and providing the aural experience of a well-made meadow in July).

Cowslip (Primula veris) is among the most beloved of all British wildflowers — nodding clusters of deep yellow, fragrant flowers on erect stems in April and May, one of the first of the meadow wildflowers to appear. Historically lost from much of its former range by changes in agricultural practice, it has recovered significantly on road verges and protected sites and establishes readily in garden conditions given neutral to alkaline, reasonably well-drained soil. It will also grow well in light shade.

Common spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) is the most garden-amenable of Britain’s native orchids — more reliably establishing from seed or purchased plants than most other orchid species. Its flower spikes, in shades of pale lilac-pink with darker spotting, are produced in June and July, and its spotted leaves are ornamental for much of the growing season. It requires undisturbed, low-fertility, neutral to alkaline soil and the patience to wait two to three years for establishment.

Chalk and Limestone Grassland

Wild marjoram (Origanum vulgare) is the native ancestor of the culinary herb and produces dense clusters of tiny purple-pink flowers from July to September that are among the most important nectar sources in the garden. On chalk and limestone soils in full sun, established plants of wild marjoram are alive with butterflies on warm days — the range of species visiting a single plant in high summer can be extraordinary. It is one of the few wildflowers that is also fully at home in the cultivated herb garden.

Small scabious (Scabiosa columbaria) is the chalk-grassland counterpart of field scabious — more delicate in stature, with smaller, paler lilac flower heads on slender stems. A plant of the thinnest, most alkaline soils, where it persists in the face of drought and competition through the sheer modesty of its requirements.

Horseshoe vetch (Hippocrepis comosa) is a sprawling, low-growing perennial with bright yellow flowers from April to July — the sole larval food plant of the chalkhill blue butterfly, and consequently one of the most ecologically specific wildflowers in the British flora. Where horseshoe vetch grows on chalk, chalkhill blues follow.

Clustered bellflower (Campanula glomerata) is one of the most striking of the chalk grassland species — tight clusters of deep violet-blue tubular flowers at the top of stiff, erect stems in June and July. It is vigorous enough to establish in a garden border context and robust enough to hold its own against competition in a managed chalk grassland garden. One of the most intensely coloured of all British wildflowers.

Salad burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) is grown for its foliage as much as its flowers — round, deeply toothed leaflets with a faint cucumber fragrance, staying green through winter on chalk soils where most plants have died back. The small crimson flower heads are interesting rather than spectacular, but the plant’s evergreen winter rosette and its tolerance of very thin chalk soils make it invaluable.

Bee orchid (Ophrys apifera) is perhaps the most astonishing of all British wildflowers — its flowers are an extraordinary mimicry of a bee, evolved to attract the male bee for pollination by deception, though in Britain the bee species it evolved to attract is absent, and it relies instead on self-pollination. Finding a bee orchid self-established in a garden lawn or on a newly created chalk bank is one of the most exciting events available in amateur natural history. It cannot be reliably cultivated — it requires specific soil fungi for germination and establishment — but where chalk or limestone rubble is incorporated into the garden soil, bee orchids sometimes appear spontaneously within a few years.

Woodland

Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) is the native British bluebell — distinct from the larger, scentless Spanish bluebell (H. hispanica) that has become widespread in gardens and poses a serious threat to the native species through hybridisation. The native bluebell is smaller, with a more strongly one-sided flower spike, narrower petals that reflex at the tips, and a delicate, sweet fragrance that is entirely absent from the Spanish form. Growing native bluebells from bulbs purchased from reputable specialist suppliers is a meaningful conservation act as well as a garden pleasure. They require moist, humus-rich, slightly acid soil in dappled shade.

Wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa) carpets the floors of ancient woodlands in April with a white-flowered delicacy of extraordinary beauty — the petals flushed with pink-purple on the reverse, nodding slightly, appearing in vast drifts weeks before the woodland canopy closes. It spreads slowly by rhizome in appropriate conditions — cool, moist, humus-rich soil under deciduous trees — and once established is among the most self-sustaining of all garden plants. It is, however, slow to spread, and the most effective way to establish a colony is to purchase pot-grown plants in growth rather than dormant rhizomes.

Primrose (Primula vulgaris) is one of the most universally loved of all British wildflowers — its pale yellow, faintly fragrant flowers appearing from February to April at the base of hedgerows, on shaded banks and in woodland, announcing spring with more authority than almost any other plant. It establishes readily in garden conditions given cool, moist, humus-rich soil and light to moderate shade. It self-seeds gently and spreads by division of the rootstock over time. The double-flowered forms, available in cream and pale pink, are beautiful garden varieties that retain the charm of the wild species.

Red campion (Silene dioica) is one of the most cheerful of all woodland edge plants — bright rose-pink flowers on branching stems from April to June, continuing sporadically through summer, self-seeding freely and naturalising with effortless vigour in semi-shaded conditions. It combines beautifully with bluebells, wood anemones and primroses in the early spring woodland garden.

Wild garlic (Allium ursinum) transforms the floors of moist woodlands in April into a sea of white — the flat, white-starred flower heads above broad, intensely garlic-scented leaves covering the ground in dense drifts. In the right conditions — moist, humus-rich soil in significant shade — it will colonise very large areas. The leaves are edible and delicious in pesto, soup and salad. The combination of its ornamental, ecological and culinary qualities makes it one of the most practical of all woodland wildflowers for the garden.

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is a biennial of hedgerow banks and open woodland clearings, producing its extraordinary spires of purple-pink (or occasionally white) thimble-shaped flowers in June and July of its second year. It is reliably self-seeding in appropriate conditions — slightly acid, reasonably moist, partially shaded — and once a colony is established it sustains itself indefinitely through the annual cycle of seedling development and adult flowering. One of the most important plants in the garden for bumblebees, which enter the flower tubes and collect pollen with loud, audible buzzing. The white form, ‘Alba’, is exceptionally beautiful.

Wetland

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) is one of the great plants of damp meadows and stream banks — tall, with clusters of creamy, frothy flowers of extraordinary fragrance in June and July. The scent of meadowsweet is one of the defining aromas of the British summer, honey-sweet and slightly almond-like. It requires moist to wet soil and grows strongly in these conditions, producing a statuesque plant of 1.2 metres or more. Excellent for the pond margin and the boggy border.

Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is one of the most dramatic of all wetland wildflowers — tall spikes of vivid magenta-purple flowers from June to September, up to 1.5 metres in height, producing an extraordinary display of colour at the water’s edge. An important nectar source for many insects and one of the most visually striking of all native plants in its preferred moist to wet conditions.

Yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus) is the native British iris — vigorous, upright, with sword-like leaves and large, clear yellow flowers in May and June. It grows in shallow water or wet soil and can become dominant in small ponds if not managed. In larger wetland areas it is invaluable both visually and ecologically.

Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) flowers in March and April with gleaming, butter-yellow flowers of great simplicity and beauty — one of the earliest and most cheerful of all waterside plants. Grows in shallow water or consistently wet soil.

Water avens (Geum rivale) is one of the most delicate and underused of all wetland wildflowers — nodding, bell-shaped flowers in a warm, dusty rose-pink with a contrasting darker calyx, produced from April to September. It grows in moist, partially shaded conditions and is considerably more refined in flower than its robust constitution might suggest.

Cornfield Annuals

Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) was once one of the most abundant wildflowers of arable Britain — its vivid blue flower heads appearing in every cereal field from June to September. Agricultural improvement (particularly the introduction of herbicides) reduced it to near-extinction as a genuine wildflower, but in gardens it is among the most rewarding of all annual sowings: easy, early, long-flowering and available in deep electric blue that few cultivated annuals can match. It must be sown directly in open, relatively poor, disturbed soil; sow in autumn or early spring for flowers from June.

Corncockle (Agrostemma githago) is another arable casualty — once common in grain crops throughout Britain, now functionally extinct as a wild plant due to herbicide use and seed-cleaning technology. In the garden, its tall, slender stems carrying large, silk-pink flowers with dark veining in June and July are among the most beautiful of all the cornfield annuals. The seeds, however, are toxic, which limits its use in gardens accessible to children or pets.

Corn chamomile (Anthemis arvensis) bears white, daisy-like flowers from May to August — similar in appearance to the common chamomile but without the apple fragrance, though still attractive to pollinators. Lower-growing and more spreading than some of the other cornfield annuals.

Corn marigold (Glebionis segetum) was the yellow flower of arable fields — vivid golden-yellow daisy flowers from June to September, sowing and re-seeding annually on disturbed, open ground. Easy to grow in the garden from direct sowing in spring or autumn.

Phacelia tanacetifolia — technically not a British native but now widely naturalised and among the most important bee plants available in annual sowings — deserves inclusion for its exceptional ecological value: the densely clustered, vivid lavender-blue flowers are visited by virtually every bee species in the garden from the moment they open. One of the most powerful single-species bee attractants available to the gardener.


The Cornfield Annual Garden

The cornfield annual approach is the most immediately achievable wildflower garden strategy for most gardeners, requiring neither long-term soil management nor patience through multiple seasons to produce results. A bed or strip of ground cultivated in autumn or spring, sown with a cornfield annual mix in March or April, will produce flowers by June that are among the most beautiful and ecologically valuable available anywhere.

The essential cornfield mix contains: field poppy (Papaver rhoeas), cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), corn chamomile (Anthemis arvensis), corncockle (Agrostemma githago) and corn marigold (Glebionis segetum). To this can be added: Phacelia tanacetifolia, Nigella damascena (love-in-a-mist), Ammi majus (bishop’s lace) and Calendula officinalis (pot marigold). The additions blur the boundary between native wildflower and garden annual, but the effect is both beautiful and ecologically rich.

The key cultivation principle is that these are plants of relatively poor, disturbed soil. Raking a fine tilth on a prepared bed — without adding compost or fertiliser — and sowing the seed thinly in March to April, then standing back, produces reliable results. Self-seeding can be encouraged by allowing plants to set seed before the first hard cut in autumn, at which point the bed is roughly scarified by raking, leaving open patches of bare soil on which the seed can germinate.


Sourcing: The Provenance Question

One of the most important and most frequently overlooked aspects of wildflower gardening is the provenance of the seed and plants used. Native wildflowers should, where possible, be sourced from seed of British provenance — ideally from the same regional gene pool as the area where they will be planted. Wild plant populations have adapted to their local conditions over thousands of years, and the introduction of seed from continental Europe or from distant parts of Britain can subtly alter the genetic composition of local populations if it crosses with them.

The practical consequence for the gardener is to buy from suppliers who can confirm British or at least northern European provenance of their wildflower seed, and to avoid generic supermarket ‘wildflower seed mixes’ that frequently contain cultivated garden varieties of wildflowers — large-flowered, brightly coloured forms selected for show rather than ecological function — alongside seed of unknown provenance.

Reputable wildflower seed suppliers include Emorsgate Seeds, Naturescape, Really Wild Flowers, and the RSPB, all of whom can advise on appropriate regional mixes and confirm seed provenance. For plug plants, Landlife Wildflowers and the specialist natural gardening nurseries supply pot-grown native plants that are correctly identified and provenance-tracked.

The question of introduced ‘wildflowers’ — plants native to Britain but sourced from cultivated rather than wild populations — is a more nuanced one. For the garden, provenance-tracked cultivated seed is far preferable to no wildflowers at all; the ecological argument is not undermined by using non-local seed if the alternative is a conventional planted border.


Management: The Long Game

The wildflower garden is not a set-it-and-forget-it proposition. It is a managed system whose productivity depends on consistent application of the correct management regime, year on year. The management is not arduous — a meadow area requires two or three cuts annually, a woodland understory needs occasional thinning, a cornfield annual bed needs autumn cultivation and spring sowing — but it must be done, and done at the right times.

The most important single management tool is the scythe or strimmer, used in late July or early August to make the annual meadow cut. A rotary mower can be used but tends to produce a less clean result and may not cope well with very tall, rank vegetation in an established meadow. A scythe, properly set and sharpened, cuts cleanly, quietly and without throwing up the seed — though it requires learning to use effectively and a reasonable level of physical fitness. For most domestic meadow areas, a strimmer with a blade attachment (not a nylon cord) is the most practical tool.

The arisings — the cut material — must be removed from the meadow within a few days of cutting. Leaving it to rot in place adds fertility to the surface and defeats the entire purpose of the exercise. Compost it elsewhere, use it as mulch in the kitchen garden, or dispose of it in the council green waste collection. This is not optional.


A Note on Garden Design

The wildflower garden at its best is not a wild-looking garden. It is a designed and managed landscape that achieves a quality of naturalness through understanding of ecological systems — quite different from the unmanaged look of a neglected garden, which tends toward a uniform coarseness dominated by the most competitive species.

The most inspiring wildflower gardens — Piet Oudolf’s work at Hauser and Wirth, the meadow gardens of Nigel Dunnett and James Hitchmough at Sheffield, the native plant borders at the Garden Museum in London — share a quality of purposefulness and restraint. They are not random. They are designed, in every meaningful sense, by people with a deep understanding of which plants grow together naturally, how they compete and cooperate, and how to compose a planting that rewards sustained observation across the full arc of the growing season.

For the home gardener, the equivalent is a developing understanding of the wildflowers appropriate to their own soil and situation, gradually refined over years of growing, observation and occasional failure. The wildflower garden is one of the most long-term and most educationally rich of all garden projects — it teaches plant ecology more effectively than any textbook, simply by demonstrating, year by year, which plants thrive and which are defeated by conditions they did not choose.


Wildflowers and the Gardener’s Calendar

February. The first signs of life in the woodland garden: snowdrops, if planted, and the earliest primroses. A good time to plan and order seed for spring sowing.

March. Sow cornfield annual mixes on prepared ground. Plant pot-grown woodland wildflowers — wood anemone, primrose, bluebell — while in growth for the best establishment. Marsh marigold begins at the pond edge.

April. The great month of the woodland floor: bluebells, wood anemones, wild garlic, primroses. Cowslips in the meadow. Yellow rattle germinates in the lawn if sown last autumn.

May. Ox-eye daisies begin. Cornfield annuals germinate and establish. Meadow buttercups in the long grass. Foxglove rosettes are preparing to bolt.

June. The great meadow month: field scabious, meadow cranesbill, ragged robin, knapweed beginning. Cornfield annuals at peak — field poppies, cornflowers. Foxgloves at full height.

July. Yellow rattle ripens and rattles. Wild marjoram alive with butterflies on chalk. Purple loosestrife at the water’s edge. Meadowsweet. The main meadow cut at the end of July, after seed has set.

August. The meadow after cutting looks brown and uninspiring for three to four weeks — resist the temptation to intervene. New rosettes of meadow plants will appear from September.

September. The meadow begins its second wind: knapweed continues, field scabious lingers. Autumn seeds set and fall. Gather seed of cornfield annuals for next year’s sowing.

October. Meadow orchid seed germinates, invisibly, in the soil. Yellow rattle seed sown now on scarified lawn. Primrose and bluebell bulbs planted.

November to January. The meadow at rest, structurally interesting if left uncut: seed heads for birds, tussocks for hibernating insects. Resist the urge to tidy.


Why Wildflowers Matter More Than Ever

The rewilding of gardens is sometimes presented as an ideological position — a rejection of the conventional, the controlled, the ornamental in favour of the authentically natural. It need not be any of these things. A drift of cowslips in a lawn, a patch of cornfield annuals in a vegetable garden, a pond edge planted with native marginals, a single ancient hedgerow plant in a border — these are not ideological acts. They are practical responses to a world in which the habitats that sustained millions of insects, birds and plants for thousands of years have been largely destroyed in a single human lifetime, and in which gardens represent one of the most significant remaining opportunities for restoration.

They are also, it must be said, extraordinarily beautiful. The ox-eye daisy does not need to be justified by its nectar value, though the nectar value is real and important. It is sufficient that it is beautiful — white and golden and luminous in the June light, moving in the slightest breeze, as much at home in an English landscape as anything that has ever grown there.

The beauty was always there. We simply stopped growing the conditions that allowed it to appear. Restoring those conditions is, in the end, one of the most rewarding things a garden can do.
