Most needle loss comes down to one thing: the tree running out of water. These steps help you avoid that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Start with a fresh tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Needle drop is far easier to prevent if the tree is in good shape when you buy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Do the bend test.<\/strong> Pinch a few needles. They should be flexible and springy, and not snap or feel brittle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do the tap test.<\/strong> Lift the tree an inch or two and drop it on its trunk end. A few inner, older needles falling is normal. A shower of green needles is not.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check the colour and smell.<\/strong> Look for deep, vibrant green and a fresh resin scent. Avoid dull, yellowing or dusty trees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pick the right species.<\/strong> Nordmann fir is known for holding its needles well and is the usual choice if shedding is your main worry. Norway spruce is traditional and cheap but sheds noticeably faster indoors. Fraser fir and Noble fir also hold needles well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ask when it was cut.<\/strong> Trees cut recently, or sold from a farm where you can see them growing, are the best bet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Store it properly before bringing it in<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are not putting the tree up straight away:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep it <strong>outdoors in a cool, shaded, sheltered spot<\/strong>, out of wind and sun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stand the trunk in a <strong>bucket of water<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave any netting on until you are ready to decorate, as it protects the branches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Make a fresh cut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the single most important step. Once a tree is cut, sap seals the base within a few hours and stops it drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Saw 2 to 3 cm (about an inch) off the bottom<\/strong> of the trunk just before it goes in water. Most sellers will do this for you, but if more than a few hours have passed since, cut again at home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cut straight across.<\/strong> Do not shave it into a point or a V shape, which reduces the surface area for drinking and makes it harder to stand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not strip the bark<\/strong> from the sides of the trunk. The outer layers just under the bark are where much of the water is taken up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get the tree into water <strong>straight after cutting<\/strong>, ideally within about 30 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Use a good stand and keep it topped up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Choose a stand with a generous water reservoir.<\/strong> As a rough rule, a tree drinks about 1 litre (a quart) of water per 2.5 cm of trunk diameter per day, and a large tree can drink a lot in its first days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check the water every day.<\/strong> Never let the level drop below the base of the trunk. If it does, the cut seals over again and the tree stops drinking, and re-cutting at that point is awkward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use plain tap water.<\/strong> Sugar, aspirin, bleach, lemonade and commercial additives have not been shown to help and some can be harmful. Fresh water is all it needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not drill or whittle the trunk to fit the stand.<\/strong> Choose a stand that fits the trunk instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Position it away from heat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warm, dry air dries out a tree fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep it <strong>away from radiators, fireplaces, stoves, heat vents and direct sunlight.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you can, put it in one of the <strong>cooler rooms<\/strong> in the house.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn the heating down a notch, or turn off the radiator nearest the tree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A humidifier in a very dry room can help a little.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Decorate with care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use LED lights.<\/strong> They produce much less heat than old incandescent bulbs, which also makes them safer around a tree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch lights off when you go to bed or leave the house.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hang the heaviest decorations on strong, inner branches, and avoid pulling hard on branch tips.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skip fake snow sprays and flocking, which can block the needle pores and add weight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Handle with care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid dragging the tree or knocking branches against doors and walls, since this speeds needle loss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vacuum or sweep up fallen needles regularly. A few needles shed from the inside of the tree is normal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Know the warning signs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tree is getting dry when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Needles feel brittle and snap rather than bend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many green needles fall when you brush a branch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tree stops taking up water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dry tree is a real fire risk, so if it reaches this point, take it down. Lights should always be switched off before you leave it unattended, and the tree should be kept clear of candles and open flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick checklist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Buy fresh, and consider Nordmann fir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Store outdoors in water until you are ready.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut 2 to 3 cm off the base just before setting it up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put it in water within 30 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check and refill the water daily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep it away from heat sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use LED lights and switch them off overnight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dispose of it responsibly after the holidays, ideally via a council chipping or composting scheme.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A fresh tree can last four to five weeks indoors if you start well and keep it watered.
