Funeral flowers in Hong Kong follow conventions that differ sharply from celebratory ones. The tribute is usually a wreath (\u82b1\u5708)<\/strong> or funeral basket (\u82b1\u7c43)<\/strong>, with a pair of white ribbons (\u8f13\u806f \/ \u8f13\u5e36)<\/strong> at its sides. The wording, order of names and religious fit all matter, and mistakes cause real offence at a sensitive time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. Check Before You Send<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n
Does the family accept flowers?<\/strong> Many families now put \u300c\u6055\u4e0d\u6536\u82b1\u5708\u300d or \u300c\u82b1\u5708\u6539\u70ba\u6350\u6b3e\u300d in the obituary notice, and some ask for donations to a charity instead. Respect this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Religion.<\/strong> Buddhist, Taoist, Christian and Catholic funerals use different wording (see section 4). Check the death notice or ask a mutual friend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Venue.<\/strong> Wakes are mostly held at funeral parlours (\u6baf\u5100\u9928) in specific halls. Get the parlour, the hall name or number, and the dates and times.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Rules.<\/strong> Some parlours limit the size or number of wreaths and the delivery times. Ask your florist, who will usually know.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
2. Types of Tribute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

3. Flowers and Colours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

White and yellow chrysanthemums (\u83ca\u82b1)<\/strong>, the most traditional funeral flower<\/li>\n\n\n\n
White lilies and white roses<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
White or pale-coloured orchids<\/strong>, carnations<\/strong> and gladioli<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
Greenery<\/strong>, such as ferns and leaves<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Colour palette:<\/strong> white, cream, pale yellow, soft green, with restrained touches of pale purple. Christian funerals sometimes use slightly softer colours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Avoid:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red, bright pink, orange and gold.<\/strong> These are celebratory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Bright, boldly coloured arrangements<\/strong> and red ribbons<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Dried or wilting flowers<\/strong>, and strongly scented flowers<\/strong> in small halls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Note that white and yellow chrysanthemums, which you avoid at an opening, are standard here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. The Ribbon Layout<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

5. Writing the Right Side (\u4e0a\u6b3e): The Deceased<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Pattern: Title or form of address + name + tribute term<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tribute terms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
\u5343\u53e4<\/strong>: eternal, the most common and neutral<\/li>\n\n\n\n
\u9748\u524d<\/strong>: before the spirit, respectful and widely used<\/li>\n\n\n\n
\u5b89\u606f<\/strong>: rest in peace<\/li>\n\n\n\n
\u907a\u50cf<\/strong>: before the portrait<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Use the form of address the family uses in the death notice, and copy the characters exactly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
If you are writing to a colleague about their parent, a title such as \u300c\u4ee4\u5c0a\u300d or \u300c\u4ee4\u5802\u300d can be used in a card, but on the ribbon use the formal title of the deceased.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
For a spouse or someone of the same generation, a simple \u300c\u6545 XXX \u5148\u751f\u300d is fine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
6. Centre Phrases (\u8f13\u8a5e)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The centre phrase is optional. A simple stand with only the right and left sides is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many people send money in place of, or as well as, flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
Use a white envelope<\/strong> (not red) marked \u300c\u5e1b\u91d1\u300d or \u300c\u5960\u5100\u300d, with your name written on the back or the front.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Practice on amounts varies. Many people choose an amount ending in a digit that is not the number 4, and some follow the custom of an odd number<\/strong> for funerals. If unsure, ask a relative or friend of the family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
The family often gives a small return gift: a sweet and a towel (\u6bdb\u5dfe and \u7cd6)<\/strong>, to be taken home. The sweet is meant to ease the bitterness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Hand it over at the reception desk (\u767d\u4e8b\u7c3d\u540d\u8655<\/strong>) of the wake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
11. The Small Card or Verbal Message<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
If a card is added, keep it short and sincere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With deepest sympathies for your loss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Thinking of you and your family at this difficult time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
May he\/she rest in peace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sign your name and relationship, for example \u300c\u540c\u4e8b \u9673\u5927\u6587\u300d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
\u300c\u7bc0\u54c0\u9806\u8b8a\u300d is the standard phrase for the bereaved family. Avoid it when speaking to someone very close to the deceased if you are unsure, and use something warmer such as \u300c\u8acb\u4fdd\u91cd\u300d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Don’t write \u300c\u65e9\u65e5\u5eb7\u5fa9\u300d or similar, and don’t dwell on the cause of death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
12. Ordering and Delivery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n
Order as soon as you know the dates<\/strong>. Wake and funeral dates are short notice, so florists expect urgent orders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Provide: the funeral parlour, hall name or number, the deceased’s full name, the date and time<\/strong>, and your ribbon wording in writing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Tell the florist the religion<\/strong> so they choose suitable colours and phrasing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Ask for delivery by the first day of the wake<\/strong>, or at the latest before the funeral service, and request a photo of the delivered tribute<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Check whether the parlour has a delivery cut-off time<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Proof the ribbon wording before it is printed. Double-check the deceased’s name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
