Here’s what’s still ahead on the world’s flower calendar, and what to expect from each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most significant structural change to hit British horticulture in years is playing out right now. In 2024, the RHS announced it was overhauling its flower show calendar: RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, long a summer fixture, would become a biennial event, and RHS Flower Show Tatton Park would shift to once every three years. Bloemencorso Zundert<\/strong>, held in the small North Brabant town on the first weekend of September, is built entirely around a single flower: the dahlia. Twenty neighborhood teams spend the whole year cultivating dahlia fields \u2014 around eight million blooms are used in total, some six million of them grown locally in Zundert itself \u2014 before shifting, in the final “Stick Week” before the parade, to attaching the flowers by hand onto enormous steel-and-papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 float structures that can reach 19 meters long and 9 meters high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The floats parade through town on Sunday afternoon, judged by an independent jury for the year’s best design, before a public exhibition day on Monday lets visitors get close enough to appreciate the sheer density of flowers involved \u2014 from a distance, the most accomplished floats are detailed enough that many visitors don’t immediately register that the entire surface is made of living dahlias rather than paint or fabric. Founded in 1936 and now recognized on the Netherlands’ national inventory of intangible cultural heritage, it remains, by most accounts, the largest flower parade anywhere in the world, and one built entirely by volunteers rather than professional exhibitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Closing out the season proper, the Malvern Autumn Show<\/strong> returns to Three Counties Showground in Worcestershire for its 30th-plus edition, positioning itself less as a flower show in the Chelsea mold and more as a full harvest festival. Alongside RHS floral displays and more than a hundred “Grow to Show” competitive classes for cut flowers, succulents, fruit, and vegetables, the show’s best-known fixture is the CANNA UK National Giant Vegetables Championship<\/strong>, where competitive growers chase Guinness World Records titles with marrows, giant green beans, super-sized sunflowers, and the show’s perennial headline act, enormous pumpkins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s a fitting bookend to a flower-show year that, across every continent, kept circling back to the same idea: gardens and growers responding to season, place, and community rather than working against them. Malvern’s giant vegetables and Zundert’s dahlia floats sit at one end of that spectrum, built from months of unglamorous cultivation; Sandringham’s royal borders and Southport’s peak-season marquees sit at the other. Between them, they cover most of what a flower lover could want from an autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few additional dates for anyone tracking the wider calendar: regional chrysanthemum and dahlia society shows run right through October and into November across the UK (Bishop Auckland’s long-running Late Chrysanthemum Show typically falls in early November), and \u2014 as ever with outdoor events on this scale \u2014 most of these shows remain genuinely weather-dependent.
